An Attorney Docket Number is a Reference text of up to 25 alphanumeric characters that is used to identify a patent application. This number is not assigned by the USPTO and can be any combination of numbers and letters.

专利申请文件在正式向专利局提交后，满足基本条件，就会得到专利申请号和申请日。这标志着，这份申请已经被专利局正式受理了，今后就该申请的审查，都会使用这个申请号。 但专利申请之前，代理人要撰写文件，要与申请人发明人联系，此时，代理人自己就会先编号，因为，往来的案子太多，区分此案彼案，就靠这个Attorney Docket Number ，先叫它代理人案卷号吧。

但专利申请之前，代理人要撰写文件，要与申请人发明人联系，此时，代理人自己就会先编号，因为，往来的案子太多，区分此案彼案，就靠这个Attorney Docket Number ，先叫它代理人案卷号吧。
还有，如果提出PCT申请，一些受理局不会马上就给出国际申请号，或者该申请不归该受理局管，也不会给出国际申请号，此时，为了便于查询，代理人也需要自行编号。
各个代理机构，都有自己一套编号规则。这个Attorney Docket Number ，不单单是美国人使用，其他国家，包括中国的一些所，也会有自己的编号体系的。
